Spotlight on start of year: police registration

22 August 2018

International students from certain countries are required by law to register with the police when they arrive in Manchester. In order for our University to maintain compliance with immigration regulations, we need to ensure that all students who are required to complete this process do so.

During the SLP’S Design and Discovery phase colleagues from the student immigration team collaborated with staff in Schools and Faculties to review the police registration process for students. New features have been created which will make the process easier for students to complete and will improve our reporting capabilities.

Based on nationality, students who are required to complete police registration will be prompted to do so within the new My Manchester. They will be able to choose which appointment to attend, rather than just being allocated one as at present, and the appointment will be added to their timetable. They will also receive automatic reminders to attend nearer the time.

Staff responsible for the process will be able to run reports to check whether students have attended their appointments and will be notified of students who fail to complete the process. If this is the case, the ‘task’ of police registration will be re-opened for the student in their My Manchester.

Overall, these improvements should make a process that can be relatively stressful for international students more manageable. They will have control over the time of their appointment, which is not currently the case, and will experience a booking system that is easier to use than the current process.
